Europe was thirsty for Indian textiles. Chintz - fabric printed with floral, fruit and bird motifs - was so coveted that while Indian factories struggled to satisfy demand, European industry was floundering. Not a problem for an absolutist king! In 1686, Louis XIV, the Sun King, banned its import and manufacture, until 1759 when they managed to imitate it.
